The Challenge

TapTop components, a multi-piece plastic assembly requiring precise torque fastening, presented challenges in cycle time, consistency, and overall production efficiency. As demand increased, a faster, more repeatable solution was needed to improve throughput and scalability.

The Solution

In-Position Technologies developed a custom automated assembly system designed to streamline TapTop production using coordinated multi-axis motion and precision torque control.

The system integrates motion and control technologies from leading manufacturers, including Parker Hannifin for servo drives and motion control, and Novanta IMS for high-performance stepper motors and linear actuators. A pneumatic gripping system ensures secure part handling, while the structure is built on a durable aluminum extrusion platform from TSLOTS by Bonnell Aluminum.

This combination of technologies delivers a compact, scalable automation solution designed for reliability and future expansion.

How it Works

Operators load parts into a rotating fixture, where each position is indexed into place for automated processing. A direct drive rotary motor and linear actuators coordinate movement, while a vertical torque axis applies consistent and repeatable fastening to each component.

The system combines rotary indexing, controlled torque application, and synchronized motion to maintain a smooth and efficient workflow. Integrated part counting and safety features, including light curtain protection, ensure reliable operation and operator safety throughout production.

Built for Performance. Ready to Scale.

The automated assembly system significantly reduces labor time per unit while improving consistency across every cycle. With a takt time of 4 seconds or less, the solution enables continuous production and higher throughput without increasing labor requirements.

By combining precision torque control, repeatable motion, and real-time production visibility, the system delivers a more efficient and scalable approach to assembly—helping manufacturers improve output, maintain quality, and adapt to growing demand.
