Flexible CNC Machine Tending Solution for Job Shops

Many job shops struggle to keep CNC machines running while managing labor shortages and frequent changeovers.

To solve this challenge, In-Position Technologies developed a flexible CNC machine tending solution using a Universal Robots UR10e cobot and configurable infeed system.

This turnkey integration allows operators to quickly adjust the system for different part sizes while maintaining continuous machine operation.

Challenge

The Challenge: Labor Shortages and Constant Changeovers

Before automation, the customer struggled to hire operators to load and unload CNC machines for repetitive jobs.

At the same time, the shop needed a solution flexible enough to handle frequent part changes. Many automation systems require dedicated tooling and fixed setups. However, that approach does not work well in a high-mix job shop environment.

As a result, the customer needed a solution that could automate machine tending without sacrificing flexibility.

The Solution: A Flexible UR10e Cobot Cell

To address this challenge, the In-Position Technologies team designed a complete turnkey automation system.

The integration included a Universal Robots UR10e collaborative robot, a custom adjustable slider infeed table, CNC machine interface integration and full robot programming and cell design.

Together, these elements created a flexible automation system that adapts quickly to new parts while keeping production running.

How the System Works & Results

The system keeps CNC production running while remaining simple for operators.

First, the operator adjusts the slider infeed table using thumbwheels to match the width of the blank. Next, the operator enters the part dimensions into the UR robot interface.

The robot then loads a blank into the CNC machine. Once the machining cycle finishes, the robot removes the completed part and loads the next blank to keep production moving.

As a result, the shop reduced manual loading and allowed operators to focus on higher-value work such as programming upcoming jobs. The system also increased throughput, reduced inventory pressure, and improved overall machine utilization.

Is This CNC Machine Tending Solution Right for Your Shop?

This CNC machine tending solution is ideal for high-mix job shops that run smaller production batches and require flexible automation.

Because the cobot cell adapts quickly to different part sizes, manufacturers can automate machine tending without sacrificing the flexibility needed in a dynamic machining environment.
