What do you need in order to have a successful Universal Robot demo?
The Short Answer? Not much.
At IP Tech, we have frequently worked with customers who are interested in the Universal Robot but are not sure if they are ready to see a demo of the robot. Almost every time this has happened, we find that customers are more ready for a robot demo than they think.
So what do you need?
1. An understanding of the process that you are interested in automating.
This is probably the most important part of being ready for a demo – and you probably already have the answers. We like to lean on the principles espoused by Samuel Bouchard in Lean Robotics: where is the part going, where did it come from, and what do we need to do to it. Once we understand those concepts, we can easily plan how the robot will interact with the part.
2. An open mind.
You might not have your whole work cell ready to go – and that is ok. Input and output fixturing is not a requirement for a successful demo. We have used pieces of Paper, carboard boxes, or even water bottles as temporary fixtures that allow us to perform manipulations on the part that we are working with. The only thing required is that you be able to do a little imagining of how the total solution could work.
3. Representative parts
This is really the only hard requirement for a robot demo – only because the robot needs to handle something. But…they don’t have to be real parts. We have often used throwaways like pieces of scrap metal or water bottles to show how the robot could handle your part. The best part of the Universal Robot is how easy it is to improvise on the fly. We can easily adapt to anything that you throw at us!
In summary – you’re probably ready for a robot demo now!
