Electrifying HDD Mud Transfer with Parker GVM Technology
How an all-electric drive helped improve efficiency, reduce environmental risk, and lower fuel consumption.
Horizontal directional drilling (HDD) projects demand reliable equipment in harsh operating conditions. However, traditional hydraulic systems can introduce environmental risks if hydraulic fluid leaks into drilling pits. In addition, hydraulic systems often require more maintenance and limit variable-speed control.
To address these challenges, LaValley Industries partnered with Automation Incorporated and Parker Hannifin to develop an all-electric solution using Parker’s Global Vehicle Motor (GVM) platform. The liquid-cooled permanent magnet AC motor replaced the hydraulic drive while supporting both the PITPUMP™ and the EMPOWER generator system.
The Challenge
LaValley needed to eliminate hydraulic leak risks while improving pump control and power generation. The solution also needed to withstand demanding jobsite conditions and deliver reliable performance throughout long operating cycles.
The Solution
The engineering team selected Parker’s liquid-cooled GVM motor because it provides high power density in a compact package. Direct stator cooling improves thermal performance and supports continuous operation under demanding loads. The system also delivers smooth variable-speed control and allows the pump to reverse when clearing debris.
